The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And your garments purify! 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 And sons present by his side. 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
