The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by yonder city 1 in which you are now living 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) the freeing of a slave, 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 Of a related orphan, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
