Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician 109 who seeks to drive you from your land what do you command' 110 They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers, 111 to bring together at the Pharaohs court all the skillful magicians. 112 The magicians came to the Pharaoh and said: "Is there reward for us if we succeed?" 113 He said: yea! and verily ye shall be of those brought nigh. 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 He said, "You throw [first]!" When they made their cast, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck them with awe, for they showed a great [feat of] magic. 116 And We revealed to Moses: 'Cast thy staff!' And lo, it forthwith swallowed up their lying invention. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed and what they had produced came to nothing: 118 So the (great ones) were vanquished there and then, and were made to look small. 119 And down fell the sorcerers, prostrating themselves 120 Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 "Be sure I will cut off your hands and your feet on apposite sides, and I will cause you all to die on the cross." 124 They said: "For us, We are but sent back unto our Lord: 125 And you do not resent us except because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience and let us die as Muslims [in submission to You]." 126
