The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise, and warn! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And your clothing purify 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
