We created man out of dry clay, from moulded mud, 26 whereas the invisible beings We had created, [long] before that, out of the fire of scorching winds. 27 And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 28 And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration." 29 So, the angels - all of them - fell down in prostration, 30 except iblis (father of the jinn) who refused to be one of those who prostrated themselves. 31 Said He, 'What ails thee, Iblis, that thou art not among those bowing?' 32 He answered, “It does not befit me to prostrate myself to a human whom You have created from sounding clay made out of black smelly mud.” 33 Said Allah, “Therefore exit from Paradise, for you are an outcast.” 34 “And indeed you are accursed till the Day of Judgement.” 35 Said [Iblis]: "Then, O my Sustainer, grant me a respite till the Day when all shall be raised from the dead!" 36 Allah said: "For sure you are granted respite 37 Till the period of the time made known. 38 He said: My Lord! because Thou hast made life evil to me, I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I will certainly cause them all to deviate 39 Except Thy servants from among them, the devoted ones. 40 Allah said: this is the path leading unto Me straight. 41 “Indeed you do not have any power over My bondmen, except those wanderers who follow you.” (The devil is unsuccessful in tempting Allah’s chosen bondmen to commit sin.) 42 And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all! 43 with seven gates leading into it, each gate receiving its allotted share of sinners. 44
