Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)? 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust, 21 And your Lord comes with the angels in rows, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
