The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel, 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for those that ask and those that are dispossessed, 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 and guard their private parts 29 Are free of blame, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
