The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 in which you are now living 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does man think that no one saw him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
