The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 For him that gives and fears (Allah) 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 He verily will be content. 21
