The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Surely to your Lord is the return. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
