A multitude from the ancients. 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Did you create it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
