The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ ALIF LAM RA. These are the verses of the Book and the perspicuous oration. 1 A time will surely come when those who are bent on denying the truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God, 2 Leave them to feast and revel, beguiled by hope; they will come to know soon. 3 And never have We destroyed any community [for its wrongdoing] unless a divine writ had [previously] been made known to it; 4 No nation can outstrip its term, nor do they put it back. 5 And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad. 6 "Why do you not bring angels to us if you are of the truthful ones?" 7 We do not send the angels but with truth, and then they would not be respited. 8 Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. 9 We sent Messengers to the ancient people who lived before you. 10 and never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him. 11 This is how We make the mocking* enter the hearts of the guilty. (* The acts of disbelief.) 12 who do not believe in it, although the way which those [evildoers] of olden times had to go has long been within their ken. 13 If We were even to open for them a way to the heavens, and they could continually climb up to it in broad daylight, 14 still they would say: 'Our eyes were dazzled; truly, we must have been a bewitched people' 15
