The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he beheld, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
