AND, INDEED, [a time came when] We thus inspired Moses: "Go forth with My servants by night, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea; [and] fear not of being overtaken, and dread not [the sea]." 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his legions so they were overwhelmed from the sea with that which drowned them. 78 The Pharaoh and his people had gone away from guidance. 79 O ye Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and We made a Covenant with you on the right side of Mount (Sinai), and We sent down to you Manna and quails: 80 'Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you; but exceed not therein, or My anger shall alight on you; and on whomsoever My anger alights, that man is hurled to ruin. 81 Yet I am All-forgiving to him who repents and believes, and does righteousness, and at last is guided.' 82 ۞ [Allah] said, "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?" 83 He said: They are here on my track and I hastened on to Thee, my Lord, that Thou mightest be pleased. 84 He said, “We have therefore tried your people after you came, and Samri has led them astray.” 85 Then Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: "O my people! Did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Did then the promise seem to you long in coming? Or did you desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you, so you broke your promise to me (i.e. disbelieving in Allah and worshipping the calf)?" 86 They said: "We did not break our promise to you of our own will, but we were made to carry the loads of ornaments belonging to the people, which we threw (into the fire), and so did Sameri. 87 Then the Samiri forged the body of a motionless calf which gave out a hollow sound." The people said, "This is your Lord and the Lord of Moses whom he (Moses) forgot to mention". 88 What? Did they not see that thing returned no speech unto them, neither had any power to hurt or profit them? 89
