The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the night enshrouding 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And denies the best [reward], 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
