He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 To him you attend; 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And he fears, 9 you pay him no heed. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble and pious. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what did He create him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 How We pour water in showers 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 Olives and dates, 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 mother, father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones. 42
