The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
