He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him you attend; 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and fears (Allah), 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 By no means (should it be so)! For it is indeed a Message of instruction: 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 In the hands of scribes (angels). 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man, then, consider [the sources of] his food: 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and grasses: 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and sons. 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 [Some] faces, that Day, will be bright - 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Dust shall cover them 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
