The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 they see it as being far off; 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all those on earth. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 But not so the worshippers 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
