He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 To him you give attention. 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 and so, whoever is willing may remember Him 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his sons; 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
