[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and springs. 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
