He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 to a rich man, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 And as to him who comes to you striving hard, 8 and who has fear of God, 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Noble and pious. 16 Accursed be man! How stubbornly he denies the Truth. 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 Then We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 And dense gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 on that Day a man shall flee from his own brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Some faces will on that Day be bright with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
