A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left - how are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
