Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
