۞ “Gather all the unjust persons and their spouses, and all that they used to worship!” 22 other than Allah, and guide them to the Path of Hell! 23 And halt them so that they may be questioned. 24 [They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?" 25 In fact this day they have all surrendered. 26 And they will advance toward each other mutually questioning. 27 They said, “It is you who used to come to us from our right, in order to sway.” 28 They shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers; 29 "And we had no authority over you. Nay! But you were transgressing people (disobedient, polytheists, and disbelievers). 30 "So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins). 31 We led you astray as we were ourselves astray." 32 So all of them on that day are sharers in the chastisement. 33 Thus do We treat the culprits. 34 Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)," they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it). 35 And said: "Should we abandon our gods for the sake of an insane poet?" 36 In fact, he had brought them the truth and had acknowledged the Messengers (who were sent before him). 37 Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom - 38 And be rewarded but only for what you had done, 39 Save the servants of Allah, the purified ones. 40 shall have a known provision -- 41 and fruits while they are honored. 42 In gardens of delight, 43 (Sitting) on couches, face to face, 44 A cup will be passed round among them [with a drink] from unsullied springs, 45 white, a delight to the drinkers, 46 Neither does it intoxicate, nor give a headache. 47 And with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes; 48 as if they were hidden pearls. 49 And they will all turn to one another, asking each other [about their past lives]. 50 A speaker from among them shall say: Surely I had a comrade of mine, 51 “Who used to tell me, ‘Do you believe it is true?’ 52 ‘That when we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, that we will either be rewarded or punished?’ 53 He will say: -- Do you wish to know where he is now?' 54 Then he looks, and sees him in the midst of Hell. 55 'By God', he said, 'you had almost ruined me. 56 If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell]. 57 “So are we never to die?” (The people of Paradise will ask the angels, with delight, after the announcement of everlasting life.) 58 except for our first death, and are we not chastised? 59 Verily this is the supreme achievement! 60 for the like of this let the workers work.' 61 Is such [a paradise] the better welcome - or the [hellish] tree of deadly fruit? 62 We have indeed made that a punishment for the unjust. 63 Indeed it is a tree that sprouts from the base of hell. 64 and its fruits are like the heads of devils. 65 They will eat from it and fill their bellies with it; 66 then on top of it they have a brew of boiling water, 67 And once again: Verily, the blazing fire is their ultimate goal 68 They found their fathers had gone astray; 69 But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps. 70 And certainly most of the ancients went astray before them, 71 And assuredly We sent among them warners. 72 See how those who were warned met their end! 73 EXCEPT for God's true servants, [most people are apt to go astray.] 74
