Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 in the midst of gardens and fountains, 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
