a large group of the earlier people 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 And say: "We have fallen into debt; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
