The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and springs. 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
