A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
