۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They said: We found our fathers worshippers of them. 53 He said: "Certainly you and your fathers have all been in manifest error." 54 They said: "Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who play about?" 55 He said, "Your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. It was He who created them and I testify to this fact". 56 "And by Allah, I have a plan for your idols - after ye go away and turn your backs".. 57 So he smashed them up to pieces with the exception of the biggest, so that they may turn to it. 58 (When they saw the idols in this state) they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Surely he is one of the wrong-doers." 59 They said: We heard a youth called Ibrahim speak of them. 60 They said: Then bring him (hither) before the people's eyes that they may testify. 61 (On Abraham's arrival) they said: "Abraham, are you he who has done this to our gods?" 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 They then turned to themselves, and said: verily ye it is who are the wrong-doers. 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said: 'Would you then worship that, instead of Allah, which can neither help nor harm you? 66 Fie upon you and upon all that you worship instead of God! Will you not, then, use your reason?" 67 They said, 'Burn him, and help your gods, if you would do aught.' 68 We said, "O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Abraham!" 69 They desired to outwit him; so We made them the worse losers, 70 And We delivered him as well as Lut (removing them) to the land which We had blessed for all people. 71 And We bestowed upon him Ishaque (Isaac), and (a grandson) Ya'qub (Jacob). Each one We made righteous. 72 and appointed them leaders to guide by Our Command and We revealed to them to do good deeds, and to establish the prayer, and the giving of charity, and they were for Us worshipers. 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
