A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
