Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
