a large group of the earlier people 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
