Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 (We revealed it on the Night) wherein every matter is wisely determined 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a noble messenger, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying exalt not yourselves against Allah; verily I have come unto you with an authority manifest. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
