And indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 26 And the jinn We created before from scorching fire. 27 And (remember) when your Lord said to the angels: "I am going to create a man (Adam) from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 28 and when I have formed him fully and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down before him in prostration! 29 So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together 30 except iblis (father of the jinn) who refused to be one of those who prostrated themselves. 31 He said: O Iblis! what excuse have you that you are not with those who make obeisance? 32 He said: I am not one to prostrate myself unto a mortal whom Thou hast created out of potter's clay of black mud altered! 33 Said He: "Go forth, then, from this [angelic state]: for, behold, thou art [henceforth] accursed, 34 Upon thee shall rest the curse, till the Day of Doom.' 35 He said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised. 36 "You are among the reprieved," (said the Lord), 37 Till the Day of the Time known. 38 He said: my Lord! because Thou hast led me to err I will surely make things fairseeming unto them on the earth and will surely seduce them all: 39 But not such of them as are Thy bondmen single-hearted. 40 Allah said: this is the path leading unto Me straight. 41 Lo! as for My slaves, thou hast no power over any of them save such of the froward as follow thee, 42 And lo! for all such, hell will be the promised place. 43 It hath seven gates, and each gate hath an appointed portion. 44
