[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 Their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear God? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 Have fear of God and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 and erect huge palaces as though you will live for ever, 129 When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. 130 "Be, then, conscious of God and pay heed unto me: 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 He has given you abundance of cattle and children 133 and gardens, and springs: 134 for, verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 135 They said, “It is the same for us, whether you advise us or not be of the preachers.” 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 And we are not to be punished." 138 In this there is evidence (of the Truth), yet most of them do not have any faith. 139 Surely, your Lord is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 140
