[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 When their brother Hud said unto them: fear ye not? 124 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 125 fear God, then, and obey me. 126 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Do you build over each high place a sign to amuse yourselves! 128 and raise strong mansions as if you were to live forever? 129 When you attack, you attack as tyrants do. 130 "Be, then, conscious of God and pay heed unto me: 131 Have fear of the One who has bestowed upon you all that you know. 132 He has bestowed on you cattle, and sons, 133 gardens and fountains. 134 "Truly I fear for you the Penalty of a Great Day." 135 They said: It is all one to us whether thou preachest or art not of those who preach; 136 this is nothing but a habit of the ancients: 137 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" 138 Then they accused him of lies; so We annihilated them. Verily there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
