The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 amidst gardens and springs 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
