The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And your garments purify! 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 May he be condemned! 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what knoweth thou that which the Scorching Fire? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
