The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
(Muhammad), read in the name of your Lord who created (all things). 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.). 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 Surely! Unto your Lord is the return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 Have you considered if he were on the right way, 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Nay, if he desist not, We shall most surely drag him down upon his forehead 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We also shall call the infernal guards. 18 Nay! (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah! ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
