The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 arise and warn, 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 thy robes purify 4 and defilement flee! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he looked round; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
