He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 because the blind man approached him! 2 And what would make you know that he would purify himself, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for him who regardeth himself self-sufficient 5 to him thou attendest 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 As for the one who comes to you earnestly (striving for guidance). 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 These verses are a reminder 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 That Day shall a man flee from his own brother, 34 and from his mother and father, 35 his wife and his children. 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
