The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 And accepts the best, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze. 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
