Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And ten nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And [by] the night when it passes, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces, 21 And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 And His bonds will be such as none other can bind. 26 (On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
