Said the Council of the people of Pharaoh, 'Surely this man is a cunning sorcerer 109 Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?" 110 Then they advised Pharaoh: 'Put off Moses and his brother for a while, and send forth heralds to your cities 111 who should bring to you every skillful magician." 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and said: 'Shall we have a reward if we win?' 113 The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter." 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 He [Musa (Moses)] said: "Throw you (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them, and they displayed a great magic. 116 Then We directed Moses: 'Now you throw your rod.' And lo! it swallowed up all their false devices. 117 ۞ So the truth was proved and their works were disproved. 118 they were defeated and turned belittled, 119 But the sorcerers fell down prostrate in adoration. 120 saying, "We declare our belief in the Lord of the Universe, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 The Pharaoh said to the magicians, "You declared your belief in him (Moses) without my permission. This is a plot to throw my people out of their city. But you will soon know. 123 Surely I will cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides and thereafter I will crucify you all. 124 They answered: "Verily, unto our Sustainer do we turn 125 "But thou dost wreak thy vengeance on us simply because we believed in the Signs of our Lord when they reached us! Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy, and take our souls unto thee as Muslims (who bow to thy will)! 126
