Aaron had already, before this said to them: "O my people! ye are being tested in this: for verily your Lord is (Allah) Most Gracious; so follow me and obey my command." 90 They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us." 91 Moses said to Aaron, "What prevented you, when you saw that they had gone astray, 92 From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?" 93 Answered [Aaron]: "O my mother's son! Seize me not by my beard, nor by my head! Behold, I was afraid lest [on thy return] thou say, 'Thou hast caused a split among the children of Israel, and hast paid no heed to my bidding!" 94 Moses asked, "Samiri, what were your motives?" 95 He replied: 'I saw what they did not see and seized a handful of dust from the foot print of the messenger and so I cast it; this my soul prompted me to do' 96 'Begone! Your lot in this life is to cry: "untouchable!' said he (Moses). 'An appointment awaits you that you cannot fail to keep. Look at your god which you clung to indeed we will burn it and scatter its ashes upon the sea' 97 Your only deity is God, there is no deity but Him. His knowledge encompasses all things." 98 Thus do We relate to you (some) of the news of what has gone before; and indeed We have given to you a Reminder from Ourselves. 99 Whoso turneth away from it, he verily will bear a burden on the Day of Resurrection, 100 And will live for ever under it. How evil the burden they will carry on the Day of Doom! 101 on the Day when the trumpet is blown: for on that Day We will assemble all such as had been lost in sin, their eyes dimmed [by terror,] 102 Whispering secretly among themselves, “You have not stayed on earth but for ten days.” 103 We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: "You stayed no longer than a day!" 104
