The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 He created man from a clot of blood. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Taught man what he knew not. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 As he bethinkest himself selfsufficient. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 A votary when he (turns) to pray? 10 What thinkest thou? If he were upon guidance 11 or bade to godfearing -- 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will now call the guards! 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
