Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 Mention of the mercy of thy Lord to His bondman Zakariyya. 2 When he called to his Lord a private supplication. 3 He submitted, “O my Lord – my bones have become weak and old age shines forth from my head, and O my Lord, I have never been disappointed in my prayer to you.” 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 Inheriting me and inheriting the Children of Ya'qub; and make him, my Lord, acceptable! 6 [He was told], "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name." 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a boy when my wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age?" 8 He replied: 'It shall be so; your Lord says: "It is easy for Me, indeed, I created you before time when you were not a thing." 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Then Zachariah came forth from the shrine to his people and told them by signs to glorify the Lord morning and evening. 11 (We said): 'O John, hold fast to the Book', and We bestowed on him judgment while yet a child 12 and a tenderness from Us, and purity; and he was godfearing, 13 And was good to his parents and not forceful, nor disobedient. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
