The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Has taught man that which he knew not. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Have you seen the one who prohibits 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- 11 or orders piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 So let him call on his concourse! 17 We too would summon the braves of the army. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
