[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it (my Message of Islamic Monotheism), my reward is only from the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel; it has a right to drink (water), and you have a right to drink (water) (each) on a day, known. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
